Career Highlights
Woodward managed to get roles on TV in her early career. From 1953 to 1954, she understudied in the New York production of Picnic. This featured her future husband, Paul Newman. Woodward’s debut film was a post-Civil War Western, Count Three and Pray in 1955. Later she signed a long term contract by 20th Century Fox in January 1956, and Woodward was given the lead role in her third feature, The Three Faces of Eve, in 1957. For this, Woodward won the Best Actress Oscar.
Family and Personal Life
Woodward has been first engaged to Gore Vidal before she gets married to Paul Newman. They first met on the set of The Long, Hot Summer in 1957. Newman married Woodward in January 1958, in Las Vegas. They both remained married for 50 years until Newman’s death from lung cancer. Woodward and Newman have three daughters together. Woodward, widowed since 2008 and makes her home in Westport, Connecticut, where she and Newman raised their daughters. Woodward and Newman were the first “Hollywood star” power couples who decided to raise their children outside California.
